Sea Turtle
JD and Connie Gallant have contributed the use of their three vessels: Sea Turtle, Little Turtle, and Sea Snail to start off the collection process.
The mother ship is the "Sea Turtle" - a 40-foot by 14-foot tribrid (sail, electric, gas) that truly resembles a Galapagos... although under sail, she is much faster. Its design is perfect for the monitoring and storing of samples, and to accommodate several volunteers. With twin keels and a protected rudder, she can "beach" if needed.
Prior to purchasing the Sea Turtle, it had a small fire in the aft cabin and, although no structural damage occurred, the entire inside of the boat was coated with smoke and soot. The previous owner sold it "as is" and we began the gigantic task of removing all smoked and sooted items from the boat prior to tackling the general cleaning.
Sea Turtle was equipped with an old diesel Mercedes engine. It was quickly removed and she is now fitted with twin outboards and an electric propulsion system.
